I moved to Red Hook one year ago. The first six months I lived with the lovely Kristin Hanson. And the second six with the venerable Desira Pesta. Damn I run in good company!
So, yeah, da Hook. So far, so good. I'm not going anywhere.
Did you know that when I lived in LA I was a famous gardener? Ok, not famous like I got written about in magazines, but famous like I had a reputation among friends and neighbors. One of my dreams jobs is to be an organic farmer (also on my dream job list is ballerina and giant crane operator).
Living in New York City, I have really been missing gardening. I like getting my hands dirty, I love the miracle of seeds and dirt and sunshine and love and work and sweat making food, and I love the satisfaction of nourishing people with that home-grown miracle.
I also love composting. We always had a compost pile growing up. That's a pretty awesome miracle, too.
SO, there's a FARM in my neighborhood. Across from the new Ikea, around the corner from Parachute, called Added Value. They have a farmer's market on Saturday, and it's a CSA farm. And they have community composting. Woo-hoo! I don't know why it took me all summer to notice, perhaps because I am too busy working all the time, but I found out last weekend, and was in touch with the composting director this week, and I picked up my buckets today (one for Pesta and I's apartment, one for Parachute), and I start helping with composting in a couple of weeks.
I'm a farmer!
The dust has, literally, settled. And the glass is mostly all picked up. Not on the roof, we're saving that. But at the rest of Parachute.
"Pray tell, Layla, of what are you speaking?"
Well, we had a small fire at Parachute Sunday night/Monday morning. Just a few minutes after I left the firetrucks came, apparently. Electrical fire in the woodshop. Very localized, all the fiber arts areas were safe, but the firemen sure made a mess. I was planning on working at BurdaStyle Monday, but when I came to get my bike I couldn't leave. There was glass everywhere; they busted a lot of our beautiful skylights. Holes in the wall. Water damage downstairs. Traumatic and stressful, but it was worse for the boys in charge. We all came together and had the place pretty much put together by the end of the day, and got some 'regular' work done, and then we all went to see the new Batman together.
Yay, Paratroopers!
Also, I found a cool blog post about yours truly. Thanks, Victoria.
I was also in an Etsy Finds Storque article today.
Enough about me. What about you?
Oh, that reminds me... Pesta and I ended up going to that Celebration show Sunday. It was great. You should see them sometime if you can.
Ok, until now, my business plan has been to make stuff and sell it. That seemed sufficient. But, um, maybe I need to get a little more sophisticated if I want to get anywhere with my life, besides chained to a sewing machine and Etsy. Yes, this is more fall-out from that interview with the PR company.
Today I ordered Moo cards and started looking into building a website. I've also been talking to my dear friend Carol about the best way to go about getting my wholesale business off the ground. I am so grateful to have her in my pocket.
For the rest of today, I work on a couple of orders I need to fill, and start drafting my bio. I spent a chunk of time today reading the bios of other people I admire; time to write one for myself.
I went to Mama's yesterday to deal with a laundry crisis I was having, and of course to hang with my family. Then I saw Rain Machine, Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson, and the Wild Yaks at the CakeShop in the Lower East Side. I didn't realize how douchy LES can be. Sheesh. But Miles and the Wild Yaks nailed it. I've been a fan of Miles' for a while, and he is sounding particularly awesome right now. Check him out.
And I saw Deerhoof at the Bandshell Friday. FUNNN! Then rode my bike home in the middle of the night (went to friends' house after show) and had fun adventures in Red Hook.
I was gonna go the McCarren Pool today for Liars today, and Celebration is playing at the Music Hall of Williamsburg, but dammit I have a lot to do, and it's been a pretty musical weekend already.
I am having a perfect Sunday. I saw my first catch at the pier. And took some pictures. (Tinka is Kristin's new pup.)
